Yesterday my cabinets were primed, and the new tile was installed on the backsplash and all the way up to the ceiling. (Thanks Sam for that idea.) I used just basic subway tile that Home Depot stocks.
The cabinets are just primed, and there is no grout in the tile yet. These are my existing Corian counter tops--I love Corian, you can't kill it even if you try.
Carol and I are wondering if we should have knocked out just a few cabinets to make some open cabinet shelfs? Thoughts? It's not too late, as we have not grouted.
I will get better photos, but it's hard to beat your iphone when it comes to wide angle shots!
Jane and I had a quick trip to New York. So great to catch up with everyone, but honestly, it was so HOT!! Our hotel upgraded our room and gave us a corner room. This sounded great, but the gigantic windows made the room feel like a terrarium. We could not get the temperature below 80 degrees. Note to self--no corner rooms in NY in the summer.
Glad to be home enjoying a rare cool front in Dallas.
Trying to catch up on e-mail, I'm way behind!
Fit for a Domestic Goddess! Cooking in that kitchen would be such a treat, I'm sure you and Carol would be putting that to great use!

I love the look of those white cabinets and counters with your wooden table for color.
I'm curious what is Carol's take on the kitchen since she spends a lot of time there? :)

Carol is beyond thrilled with it--she's been pushing me to change it. If it were not for Carol, I'm sure it would have just stayed the same for the next 10 years--I'm glad she nudged me. It feels like a brand new kitchen with all of the bright white.

Great! And maybe you're right about opening some of the cabinets so you can add a little bit more personality to the kitchen. Maybe put some fresh herbs in there. Have fun cooking!
PS: I cooked your three bean chilly a lot and I can't stop loving it :) Big thanks!

Yes! go for the open cabinet idea!
I love the freestanding, open cabinet european kitchen style!!
Another idea is to make a recessed pantry with multiple small shelves inside, 6" deep, 4' wide up to the ceiling with two wood or maybe frosted glass doors.

Definitely open cabinets. In your kitchen I think you could have as many open upper level cabinets as you wanted. It will both modernize without being cold or going against your other decor.

Love the new subway tile. And yes I think some open shelves would look great in the kitchen.

I say fuck yes to knocking out some cabinet uppers to make room for shelves! It would look awesome in there, love the tile to the ceiling too.

you can't beat home depot for certain basics. the tiles look great!
i vote for some open shelves.

It looks great so far!! I think the shelf idea but I'm sure either way it will look amazing.

I removed several cabinets & the others I removed the doors ... Display you cool stuff.
Easy getting things & putting them away. I found it nice not to have so many cabinet walls! Paint them inside or use cool wrapping paper.
Looks like I'm in agreement with everyone!

I agree with a few open shelves.

I wonder if Carol will become a chef. I had a friend that went to CIA and majored in Pastry Design.

I say knock two out from left of sink and maybe two out from right ... GlasswaRe and plates tat you use often will open up the space even more!!!
Posted by: Susan | September 05, 2010 at 09:52 AM
I agree.
Some open shelves = good idea.

your kitchen looks wonderful.
Posted by: runtabella | September 05, 2010 at 07:36 PM
Instead of knocking them out maybe you could just remove the doors on a few and have them as open cabinets? I think it looks lovely :)
Posted by: TheShoeGirl | September 05, 2010 at 10:21 PM
absolutely stunning but I do agree with the girl -- open shelving is a good way to go!
Posted by: Iris dettwiler | September 06, 2010 at 04:38 AM
Why don't you remove the panel off some of the doors and replace with glass. Paint the inside of the those cabinets to add just a touch of color and also to enhance the items that you display in those cabinets.
Are you replacing the stove?
Hugs & kisses to you all.

Aunt Gail has the right idea. Open shelving looks great, but in real life and in the kitchen... It is super-simple to have your handy man replace the solid cabinet front with glass. And there are so many choices too!
Posted by: Jonesie | September 06, 2010 at 01:36 PM
great move on the tile up to the ceiling. It looks cool and different.
Exciting!

These photos are fantastic!

I love Aunt Gail's idea of glass in the doors. I like the look of open shelves but every time I see them laden with crockery etc. I think "So much to dust!" but your Aunt Gail has given an idea to achieve the best of both worlds.

but when did you come to nyc? as the weather has actually been really nice as of late!!! like REALLY nice and cool!!
i like the subway tiles. fresh. i HIGHLY suggest you cut out the cabinets and install glass in them. it opens the kitchen up a great deal. u won't regret it.

yes, definitely get some open shelves! would give your kitchen an added openness and dimension that it's currently lacking in.
Posted by: Maria | September 07, 2010 at 06:40 PM
i LOVE open shelving! definitely do it!
Posted by: audrey | September 07, 2010 at 08:19 PM
The white on white is a clean crisp look, but you MUST break it up with some glass for a little lightness, plus it will add some much needed splash of colored with your pretty china and/or glassware for some spark, eh!? - YC :)

Absolutely take out some cabinets for shelves even below the countertop. It will visually more interesting. Love the white subway tile. jrr
